AGING SERVICES

The S. C. Appalachian Council of Governments' Area Agency on Aging is designated by the Lieutenant Governor's Office on Aging as the coordinating and planning body for services for older persons in Anderson, Cherokee, Greenville, Oconee, Pickens, and Spartanburg Counties. The principal goal of the Area Agency is to develop and promote a comprehensive, coordinated community-based service delivery system with simple access that will improve the quality of life for all older adults in the region and enable them to lead independent lives with dignity in their own homes for as long as possible.

Specifically, the Area Agency on Aging goals are: plan, coordinate and advocate for a community-based service delivery system; preserve and strengthen the quality of life for older adults through community cooperation; help local communities meet the needs of a rapidly growing older population; help older adults remain in their homes; solicit input from the Advisory Committee about aging issues; provide technical assistance to service providers; provide contract management, program quality assurance and monitoring services; maintain a library of resource materials; support the S. C. Silver Haired Legislature efforts in the region; provide complaint resolution for residents of long-term care facilities and community education through the Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman Program; and operate the Family Caregiver Support Program, benefitting seniors and children by supporting the adults and older relatives who care for them; provide I-CARE and Senior Medicare Fraud Prevention programs; coordinate Senior Farmer's Market program; and, implement Volunteer Ombudsmen program.

Among the services the Area Agency contracts are:

Care management and outreach, information and referral, legal assistance, transportation, congregate meals, home-delivered meals, nutrition counseling, homemaker services, home injury prevention, residential maintenance, physical fitness, education and training, health and wellness, health screening, Senior Access, and medication management.
